Evaluate Me!

Name: Meghan Spork
Hometown: Royal Oak, Michigan
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Journalism, specialization in Public Relations
Campus Involvement: Honors College, PRSSA, Izzone
Why I Bleed Green: When I was applying for college, I was determined not to come to MSU. Both my parents were Spartans, and I wanted to forge my own path. Nevertheless, MSU ended up being the best fit for me financially while still being just close enough to home. Coming from a small school (I graduated in a class of 69), MSU was a little daunting, but with so many opportunities to get involved I truly believe MSU can be as big or as small as you want it to be.
Advice for Future Spartans: Get involved, don't be afraid. When you come to campus, you are not alone. There are a ton of freshman in the same position as you. Just be friendly, get out there, and get to know people. It will take you a long way.

Evaluate Me!

Advice for Future Spartans: Get involved in as many activities as possible. At Sparticipation at the start of school all of our campus groups come out and advise. Sign up for anything and everything that sounds fun, this is a great way to meet people on campus and find people with similar interests. Go to classes and study regularly, we are here to have a fun time but school isn't free, make your tuition worth it. Keep your door open on your floor and get to know your neighbors. All these people live together and great friendships can be formed.

Evaluate Me!

Name: Kelly Herberholz
Hometown: Troy, MI
Class Standing: Senior
Campus Involvement: Residence Halls Association, Landon Hall Government
Why I Bleed Green: I've grown up a Spartan, both my parents and two older sisters graduated form here. East Lansing is my favorite place to be. Go Green!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Kait Gustafson
Hometown: Chesaning, MI
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Elementary Education
Campus Involvement: Honors College, Inside MSU, on-campus job.
Why I Bleed Green: My parents met here and fell in love back in the 1970s - my mom was from Detroit and my dad was from the U.P. I spent my whole childhood coming here for games and other events on campus, so it always seemed inevitable that I'd become a Spartan myself. When it came time to choose a school, I did tour other places. However, when I weighed all of my options, MSU was still the perfect fit! I have always bled green and am proud to be a part of such a dynamic university with amazing things happening on our campus every day.
Advice for Future Spartans: Don't be intimidated. I came from a very rural community (there were more people in one of my classes freshman year than went to my entire high school) and although it took some adjustment, I learned that there are just too many opportunities here to let MSU's size get the better of you. Now, as a senior, I can't go anywhere on campus without running into someone I know. It may not be my quaint little farm town, but I do feel a strong sense of community here and it certainly makes such a big university seem small and personal while still giving me countless advantages only offered by a university of its magnitude.

Evaluate Me!

Why I Bleed Green: The atmosphere of MSU, the beautiful campus, the people, along with the pride and tradition of being a Spartan.
Advice for Future Spartans: Take advantage of all the resources that Michigan State has to offer, get involved in clubs and activities, go to sporting events, be open to new things, and finally, enjoy it, time flies so make the most out of it!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Hanna Porterfield
Hometown: Grandville, MI (suburb of Grand Rapids)
Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: Currently listed as Hospitality Business but really I'm more undecided. French minor!
Campus Involvement: UAB's Leadership Academy, a little bit of French Club, Spartan Ski Club, Fall Welcome Team for South Complex, and hopefully more this year!
Why I Bleed Green: I was born a Spartan baby and officially decided it was my school the first time I went in the MSU football student section my senior year of HS. After that the green clothes in my closet multiplied rapidly and was surprised at my graduation party that my mom had invited Sparty from SAF to come. Coolest thing ever. Once moving to East Lansing freshman year I had the greatest 8 months of my life, and more to come!
Advice for Future Spartans: Talk to EVERYONE. People on your floor, the person in the elevator, the person in line at Sparty's, the person next to you in class, the person on the bus. You can meet some really cool people and have a diverse group of friends. Try everything too, sign up for something even if you aren't going with a friend, because you'll make new ones there!

Evaluate Me!

Why I Bleed Green: My favorite thing about MSU is the people. Everyone is passionate about being a Spartan whether it is in class or at a sports event. Spartan spirit brings everyone on campus together.
Advice for Future Spartans: Coming from a very small high school, the size of MSU was quite intimidating to me. Over the years, I have come to love and appreciate how large MSU is. The best way to make your MSU smaller is to be involved in clubs, organizations, and events on campus. You never know who may become your next best friend!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Sarah Pomeroy
Hometown: Columbus, OH
Class Standing: Senior
Major: International Relations & Political Science-Prelaw
Campus Involvement: Residence Halls Association, Alternative Spring Break, Izzone, Roosevelt Institute, Act for Justice
Why I Bleed Green: From the moment I first toured MSU, I loved it. Michigan State had so many opportunities here and abroad. The people were so friendly and I fell in love with the campus's beauty. However, I have come to learn that MSU is so much more. MSU is growth, friendship, diversity, and new experiences. MSU is helping those who cannot help themselves, learning from your mistakes, and preparing to enter the world strong and empowered. Wherever I go after MSU, I will recall my experiences here and the people I have met and loved and I will be able to continue. Spartans are leaders, and we set an example of strength, humility, and dedication. I am completely dedicated to this university, and I love it and all it has given me. I am proud to say I am a Spartan! Go Green!
Advice for Future Spartans: MSU may seem like a big place, but it is its size that allows you every opportunity to meet new people, try new things, and challenge yourself. Try something new, ask questions, and go to a football or basketball game and feel the pure Spartan spirit when the crowd roars. College is a bit scary at first, but at MSU, it becomes the best experience you could ever have!

Advice for Future Spartans: Come to Michigan State ready for the best experience of your life! Don't be shy; meet as many people as you can. Study hard when you need to! Relax and have fun with your friends when you can! Get involved with anything that sparks your interest. Stay at the University, even on the weekends! You're at college, why are you going home!? Take part in a study abroad experience, service learning project, undergraduate research / internship, or anything else to farther your career. Finally remember, SPARTANS WILL!

Class Standing: Junior
Major: Kinesiology
Campus Involvement: MSU Pre-Physical Therapy Association, IZZONE, and work at Spartan Spirit in the Union.
Why I Bleed Green: Everyone is so friendly and helpful, and our sports are one of the reasons I chose State over other schools!
Advice for Future Spartans: Go into college with an open mind. If your first semester or year is hard on you academically/emotionally, stick it out, things will get better. And have fun!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Mia Kaartinen
Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI
Class Standing: Junior
Major: Kinesiology
Campus Involvement: Students Today Leaders Forever (community service group)
Why I Bleed Green: The Spartan family is so welcoming and accepts you with open arms. From day 1, one feels like a Spartan. The football games bring you and your peers together via the Alma Mater and the exciting atmosphere and makes you love your school. I bleed green because of the family-like atmosphere MSU has to offer.
Advice for Future Spartans: GET INVOLVED! This campus is very large with so much to offer, and the size may seem intimidating at first. However, when you get involved in one of the various clubs on campus, the size of the campus seems much smaller. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help! On the first couple days (or weeks) you're at this campus, you may get lost. Ask someone for directions! If you need help with a homework assignment, ask your T.A.! People are there for you to help you succeed, so utilize all the resources you have.

Evaluate Me!

Name: Katie Burwell
Hometown: Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: Undeclared
Campus Involvement: Greek Life, Participant in the Service Learning program, Variety of Sporting Events, Teaching Assistant in the Area of Communications
Why I Bleed Green: Being a Spartan gives me an identity that will hold true for the rest of my life. There is an overwhelming sense of pride that one obtains from such an affiliation. The connections made at the University always find a way to carry over even after all is said and done. These connections are honest, wholesome, and forever genuine. This inner circle of true green and white is what allows me to bleed green.
Advice for Future Spartans: Always be true to yourself. You are now beginning on a path that will set the foundation for the rest of your life. The choices you make will eventually shape the person you will become here at MSU. You have the strength to overcome setbacks and to be resilient and self-reliant. Know what keeps you grounded and never loose sight of it. Trust your morals and integrity. Build friendships and gain some Spartan pride. You are right where you are supposed to be so enjoy every second and always remember GO GREEN!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Josh Paciorek
Hometown: Sterling Heights, MI
Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: James Madison College- Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy
Campus Involvement: James Madison Ambassador, James Madison Student Senate, Resident Mentor
Why I Bleed Green: MSU is easy to love. The moment you step on campus for the first time, it feels like home. The best part about MSU is the people. Everyone here that you meet is proud of MSU, but they're not arrogant about it. Instead, they invite you to be a part of the MSU community. They're friendly and welcoming, and when you can go to a school with people like that, it makes your years at college that much more enjoyable.
Advice for Future Spartans: Get out, and do SOMETHING. Whether you go join a club, join a intramural sports team, buy Izzone tickets, buy football tickets (which everyone should because those are the best Saturdays of the year!), study in the lounge, or eat out on Grand River, be out of your dorm room meeting people. It's easy to make friends at MSU because there are so many friendly people, but you have to be willing to leave your dorm room and go out and do something!

Evaluate Me!

Name: Marielle Petranoff
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: Spanish, B.A. of Music
Campus Involvement: Woefully uninvolved outside of music (I'm in a band and an oboe trio), but looking to get more involved in the coming year!
Why I Bleed Green: I sort of fell into Michigan State University accidentally. I was looking for a large Midwestern school, so I submitted my application because it made sense, not out of a burning desire to go to State. Then, when I came up for a visit, everything went right. I loved the professors, I met fascinating people, the campus was beautiful, and the students were full of that famous Midwestern hospitality. It was absolutely everything that I was looking for, and my first year proved that my visit wasn’t just a fluke. Even though the school is huge, there is nothing more unifying than standing in the student section of a football game (or really any game) with thousands of other people all in the same shades of green, screaming their lungs out. In a school of 40,000, I feel very much at home.
Advice for Future Spartans: I’m going to go ahead and steal a quote from my first year resident mentor: “Embrace the awkward.” Yes, it is going to be weird for the first year of college-it’s unlike anything else you’ve experienced up to this point-but you shouldn’t let that stop you. If you like something, join a club, because there’s probably already a club for people who like that thing. It will be strange, it might be uncomfortable, but understand that we’ve all been there, too. We remember how it felt to walk into a two-hundred person lecture hall and not recognize a single face. But if you just accept the fact that it’s going to be a little bit awkward and talk to that random guy next to you, you’ll make a lot more friends, probably have better grades, and, in my opinion, have a lot more fun. At State, everyone is sympathetic towards that awkwardness and doesn’t hold it against you: there are around 7,000 new people on campus every year. A little bit of awkward could be the difference between meeting your best friends for life, making an impression on future employers and graduating with four or so years well spent, and simply completing a degree.

Evaluate Me!

Name: Megan Orth
Hometown: Ellicott City, Maryland
Class Standing: Junior
Major: James Madison: Comparative Cultures & Politics and Social Relations & Policy
Campus Involvement: Secretariat of MSUMUN, Teach for America Campus Coordinator, JMC ambassador, STLF
Why I Bleed Green: There is nothing better than a home football game in the fall - tailgating on the most beautiful campus with the best alumni and watching MSU dominate? How can you not bleed green?!
Advice for Future Spartans: Make the most of these 4 (or maybe 5) years by trying every experience you can and not taking it for granted. The years will go by fast, but I have a feeling it'll be the best times of our lives.

Evaluate Me!

Name: Madison “Maddie” Boden
Hometown: Pawleys Island, SC
Class Standing: Junior
Major: Criminal Justice, Chinese
Campus Involvement: Capital Green A Cappella, Chinese Club, Student Food Bank Volunteer, Honors College
Why I Bleed Green: MSU is a triple threat: Powerhouse sports teams, a beautiful campus, and a wonderful student and faculty community. Nothing beats being a Spartan!
Advice for Future Spartans:
First: Enjoy every moment of your college career. Take a class just because you think it’s interesting. Join a club that fascinates you. Meet new people. You’re only in college once.
Second: Stay true to yourself. Don’t do something just because it’s what everyone else is doing. College is where you find yourself; not where you go to follow someone else’s path.
Third: GO TO CLASS! It’s amazing all the things you can learn. (And it’s amazing how many professors put information on an exam that was only covered in class and not in the reading)

Evaluate Me!

Name: Amy Bratzel
Hometown: Wheaton, IL
Class Standing: Senior
Major: International Relations
Campus Involvement: Honors College, James Madison Student Senate, Izzone, Football student section
Why I Bleed Green: Michigan State has given me the opportunity to combine a small liberal arts college and a large university. James Madison College of Public Affairs is a small, tight-knit community where I receive personal attention and a wonderful yet challenging learning environment. At the same time, I benefit from the resources of a nationally known university, including Big Ten athletics, a variety of study abroad opportunities, and a large alumni base. MSU is the perfect fit for me.
Advice for Future Spartans: Go out and get involved! It might sound trite, but joining clubs or playing IM sports is a great way to meet people in the MSU community. I have made lasting friendships and received great advice from older students. It also allows me to give back to MSU and make an impact on the school. If you aren't sure about what group you want to join, try a variety of them. Even if you don't stick with it, you can still make friends and have the satisfaction of knowing that at least you tried something. It's always good to get outside of your comfort zone a little bit to challenge yourself. Joining a student group is a great way to do that.

Evaluate Me!

Name: Stephanie Hall
Hometown: Tecumseh, MI
Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: Psychology

Why I Bleed Green:I bleed green because of how much I love this school and being a Spartan. We are made up of some of the best students nationwide, and definitely one of the biggest. Everyone is instantly connected through MSU weather they graduated decades ago, or last year. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan. This huge group of people from the past and present is why I bleed green.
Advice for Future Spartans: Keep your mind open to all the opportunities at this huge campus, and for your future after MSU. Get involved and make a lot of friends and explore all different types of degrees. The school may seem huge and overwhelming at first, but making friends and getting involved instantly makes the campus smaller and a lot easier to manage. Just don't let the size overwhelm you, and ask for help!

Advice for Future Spartans: Get involved in a club or organization! Seeing and being a part of the tremendous school spirit is unforgettable, and having the whole campus come together on Saturdays in the fall at Spartan Stadium is awesome.
Advice for Future Spartans: 1. Try out a lot of different cafs, we have a lot of great on-campus dining options. 2. GET FOOTBALL TICKETS and make a lot of noise at the games. 3. Enjoy! Michigan State is the best!
